Genocide: the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group. Rwanda, a country in the middle of Africa. Is home to over nine million people, the Hutu and the Tutsis. The Hutu were farmers that arrived in the 15th century, while the Tutsis were cattle raisers. The Tutsis took control, they kept the caste system strict enforced. There was to be no integration between these two cultures, no mingling and definitely no marriages. Their state of Rwanda was strongly dominated but the Tutsis people, even though they were the minority and the Hutu were the majority. Rwanda may be one of the most populated countries, but it is also the poorest in all of Africa, also one of the poorest in the whole world. This was largely caused by the genocide that happened almost 17 years ago. They are not an industrialized country; they have shortages on the amount of land to occupy the total population of the country. The Hutu or Bahutu, also the majority, take up about 85% of the total population. They’re large in the amount of people, but they didn’t control the land they had. The Tutsis, or Batutsi or Watusi, on the other hand took up about 15% of the total population.  The Europeans arrived in 1858, and with the help of Belgium the Tutsis really began to take control over Rwanda. But by the 1960’s the Tutsis were forced out of Rwanda due to discrimination and violence. 800,000 Tutsis were killed; in 1994 the horrific event finally got the attention of the world. (Longman)
